How to start a 2024 Nissan Qashqai with a flat key battery
Use this only for the registered Intelligent Key and the stated transmission procedure. Persistent key-system faults require diagnosis rather than repeated battery workarounds.
A discharged Intelligent Key battery can be worked around by touching the key to the ignition switch, then starting within ten seconds of the chime. Use the correct transmission position and pedal procedure; this does not charge or replace the key battery.

Check the transmission before using the backup method
The UK 2024 J12 manual gives separate preparations for Xtronic and manual gearboxes. An Xtronic must be in Park; a manual must be in Neutral with the clutch pressed fully down. Keep the footbrake firmly applied for the starting sequence. This guide follows the petrol-model ignition procedure and should not be treated as instructions for a different powertrain simply because the vehicle is called Qashqai.
Listen for the chime, then watch the ten-second window
The chime after touching the key to the ignition switch is the cue for the next action. Press the ignition switch within ten seconds while keeping the required pedals depressed. Nissan notes that pressing the switch without the brake after presenting the key changes the ignition to ON instead of starting the engine. An illuminated dashboard alone is therefore not the success check.
If a key warning appears afterwards
Nissan says an Intelligent Key warning can appear after this backup recognition procedure even with the key inside. That particular occurrence is not, by itself, a malfunction. A Key Battery Low message still calls for battery replacement as soon as possible. Record the exact warning wording if the vehicle does not start; do not treat every key-system message as the same depleted-battery condition.
Common questions
Will the low-key-battery warning disappear permanently?+
No. This is an emergency recognition method. Replace the discharged key battery as soon as possible.
