How to precondition the battery in a Mercedes GLB electric
A warm cabin and a battery prepared for a fast-charging stop are different jobs. The GLB electric has a Battery information menu with controls for the second one.
Source scope: Mercedes-Benz Ireland’s September 2026 manual for the electric GLB X244. It documents a manual On option as well as AUTO. This guide does not transfer those choices to the earlier EQB or petrol GLB.
Open Charge & service → Charging options → Battery information. In the September 2026 X244 manual, AUTO prepares the battery when navigating to a charging station; On starts temperature optimisation directly; Off disables battery preconditioning.
Choose the battery function, not cabin heating
Configure the display while parked. Battery temperature optimisation prepares the high-voltage battery for charging. Pre-entry climate control prepares the passenger compartment; choosing a cabin departure time is a separate procedure.
Do not plan a charging stop around an assumed preparation time. The source does not give one fixed number of minutes that guarantees the battery will be ready.

Why the symbol may disappear
The documented process ends when the battery’s temperature conditions are adequate, when navigation to the charging station is cancelled, or when a vehicle plug is connected. A disappearing symbol therefore needs to be interpreted in context.
Battery preparation uses energy and can affect remaining range. It improves the temperature conditions for charging; it does not guarantee the station’s advertised output or remove other charging limits.
Switch it off deliberately
Choose Off in the same Battery information controls to disable battery preconditioning. Before your next planned fast charge, check the mode again rather than assuming AUTO is selected.

Can I start it without choosing a charging station in navigation?+
The September 2026 manual documents On as a direct start. AUTO is the choice explicitly associated with navigating to a charging station.
Does preconditioning force the maximum charging speed?+
No. The source also lists battery charge level, charging-station limitations, the charging system and charge control as possible influences on charging power.
Is this the same as preheating the seats?+
No. This menu concerns the high-voltage battery’s temperature, not passenger comfort settings.
