Mazda CX-5: How to replace the key fob battery

Keep coin cells away from children. If the cover does not release easily, consult the manual illustrations or a dealer.

THE QUICK ANSWER

The illustrated transmitter uses a CR2032 or equivalent battery with its positive side facing up. Use a protected screwdriver and avoid touching the circuitry.

Step by step

Tick steps as you go. Your progress stays in this tab.

Match the transmitter and prepare the tool

Compare your key with the illustrations in the linked 2025 CX-5 manual before opening it. This design has lower and upper covers plus a separate battery cap. Mazda recommends dealer replacement to avoid damage; if you do the work yourself, follow the pictured release points with a tape-wrapped flat screwdriver. A similar-looking cover is not a reason to lever against a different part of the case.

Check polarity before reinstalling the cap

The specified replacement is CR2032 or equivalent, with its positive pole facing up in the illustrated open transmitter. Check this while the battery compartment is visible. Replace the battery cap before the upper cover, then engage the lower-cover tabs as shown. Keep the pieces in removal order on a clear surface so that the separate cap is not overlooked during reassembly.

If the remote still appears unresponsive

Recheck the cell type, polarity and cover fit against the manual before forcing anything. Test the remote buttons after closing the key. Reduced operating range and a missing transmitter indicator flash can accompany low battery power, but Mazda also describes a power-saving mode that suppresses that indicator. A missing flash alone therefore does not prove that the fresh cell is defective. Consult the transmitter instructions or your Mazda dealer if the symptom continues.

Common questions

What indicates a weak key battery?+

Reduced remote range or buttons that no longer produce an indicator flash can indicate a weak cell.
